The purpose of this post is to explain “what” HEPA means and “why” it is involved with mold remediation.

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air.  Respirators, HEPA Vacuums, Air Scrubbers, and Negative Air Machines will often contain a series of filters, bags, and seals that are capable of trapping extremely small, microscopic particles and keeping them from being discharged out into the environment.

Many manufacturers state their HEPA filters can trap 99.97% of all airborne particles larger than .3 microns.

A respirator with HEPA Filters is used by individuals working within the containment area.

Use of HEPA Vacuums in a mold remediation are helpful because it is a non-invasive method to remove much of the surface mold spores and traps the mold spores inside the HEPA filters.

Air Scrubbers and Negative Air Machines circulate the air through machines that traps the mold spores inside the filters discharging clean, filtered air.

Cross-contamination is an important concern when cleaning mold.  Inadvertently spreading the spores to other parts of the house, the air handler, and duct work is common mistake many “do-it-yourselfers” make; ending up costing them more money and time.

There is a cost for safety.  HEPA Filters for Respirators can cost in excess of $25 per pair.  Canister Vacuum HEPA Filters can cost in excess of $150.  HEPA Filters for Air Scrubbers can cost in excess of $200.
